  Standards-Based Reforms:
What are They and Why are They Important?

Standards tell us what students should know and be able to do. They are designed to help students do better work in school.

Standards mean that every school across one district has the same expectations for every student in every subject because the standards are the same for all students. Individual schools and teachers may help students meet the standards in different ways. They may use different materials. They may teach differently. But the goal for everyone is the same: clear learning goals and high levels of achievement for all kids.

Clear standards take the guesswork out of learning. With standards, we know what is expected in each subject and for each grade level. Students achieve more when it's clear what they are expected to learn.

See our standards glossary.
