Standards-based education can help all students succeed but only if parents and educators understand how it works and do their part.
The unique resources in this toolkit present innovative ways to create the conversations and actions that will get more students to achieve at high levels. We've identified lots of valuable work already being done across the country, and developed hands-on tools to help you use or adapt these practices to your local situations.
These tools can help you:
- Work with parents and community members to help them understand the standards your school is working toward
- Build understanding and support within your school or district for changes in teaching and professional development that are needed to reach higher levels of achievement
- Learn about practices of assessment and reporting progress that align with standards
- Create a climate and culture within your classroom, department, or school where professionalism is valued, where risk and innovation is supported, and where all players are working toward the same objectives
Many of the tools here were developed based on work in schools in districts funded by the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation's Program for Student Achievement: Corpus Christi (TX) Independent School District, Long Beach (CA) Unified School District, San Diego (CA) Unified School District, and Jefferson County (KY) Public Schools. Education Development Center contributed to these efforts tremendously by identifying and collecting exemplary materials for the tools from these districts.
To get started, we offer a primer on standards-based reform and a standards glossary.
Please send us feedback about what is useful and what needs to be improved.
Visit the help section section for more information on how to use these tools.
